Twenty-Two, Babyyy!!

In honor of my recent 22nd birth-moment as of 2:48 this morning, I thought it’d be fun to highlight 22 of my most memorable memories (yay redundancy!), including some pertinent, and not-so-pertinent old school pictures just for kicks.  Enjoy! :) And forgive me for the massivity of this post. Yes, I just made up a new word. And I like it a lot.

1) Learning to ride my bike. (It had The Little Mermaid plastered all over it, with little sparkly ribbons coming out from the handle bars, and colored shells on the spokes!) Anyway, I remember the day my dad tried teaching me to ride without training wheels. ‘Twas one of the more frustrating days of my life. I eventually got it, but only because dad comforted me with potato chips every time I fell off. :) Psst.. Check this bike out! >>

2) Running away and blaming it on my friend. Yup, I was a terrible person. While riding my bike at my neighbor’s house, I saw my friend walking down the street. We started talking and I sorta kinda followed her all the way downtown without telling my mom where’d I’d be. (Mind you, she very had strictly told me to stay at the neighbor’s..) Mom later found me peddling along beside my friend, and so I turned on the tears and told her my friend had literally dragged me along with her by the wrist. When my mom and I got back home, I felt so guilty and apologized over and over and over again (without really telling her the truth). Mom offered me an ice pop, to which I said something dramatic, like, “But I don’t DESERVE an ice pop! I don’t deserve anything sweet ever, EVER again!” Minutes later, I enjoyed an ice pop. The blue kind. Because they are, after all, the best. And years later, I told mom the truth. She laughed. :)

3) Mom cutting my hair and giving me TERRIBLE bangs. My mom has cut my hair my entire life long, as a beauty school graduate and altogether fabulous person. BUT! When I was in elementary school, she gave me these.. << Yeah, mom, that wasn’t nice, although it was the “style!” :)

4) My parents dressing me up as an elephant and laughing at me. Yup, when I was in kindergarten, I was in a 5-minute-long Mother’s Day play, for which I played a singing elephant. While making my costume, my parents thought it would be fun to stuff my grey sweatpants and sweatshirt full of as many pillows as humanly possible, so I could barely move. Child abuse, I tell you. But mom and dad got a kick out of it. And dad fell down laughing. Sorry folks, no pictures here.

5) Finding newts in my backyard! When I was a kid, my all-time favorite pastime was exploring! And my backyard was perfect for that! I was the newt-queen! I know.. I was SUCH an awesome, nerdy kid! :)

6) Finding a huge mound of mud plopped in the corner of my garageand finding that the mud was actually a HUGE toad. Totally made my life. Obviously.

7) Making bread balls. Recipe: 1) Take two pieces of white bread. 2) Bite off the crusts, leaving only the white part! 3) Roll the two pieces into a small, compact ball of bread with your hands. 4) Eat your bread ball. BEST SNACK EVER.

8) Winning the science fair! HOLLA!! I totally won the overall grand prize for my middle school’s science fair in the 8th grade! HUGE deal, people! I got a $100 savings bond that probably amounts to $4.75 right now! (At the time, though. I was the bomb!)

9) Getting a higher gym average than Rodney! I have never been particularly athletic. But there was this one quarter in high school, when Rodney, the king of gym class and varsity sports, and the kid with whom I’d competed my whole academic life, got totally owned by me and my gym grade. I didn’t mark it on my calendar, but I definitely could have. Very memorable. (P.S., Rodney and I are very good friends!)

10) Dressing Cam up as a girl. With makeup.. Yup, as much as some of you might think this happened yesterday, it was actually when he was 6 or 7. :) My sister Lorae and I dressed him up in a b-e-a-utiful blue dress with butterflies on it, a sweet little hair clip, and blue eyeshadow. When my parents got home, my dad was about ready to bring Cam to the hospital, since his eyelids were turning colors! When I told him the truth, he wasn’t very pleased. But I was. :)

11) Helping baby sea turtles to sea. When I was 9, my family and I went to Florida for two weeks on vacation. One late, late night, while we, along with some friends, were chilling on the beach, we looked down to find what seemed like millions of little black dots scampering towards the water. Turns out the beach patrol had missed this batch of sea turtle eggs! I got to hold them in my hands and help them to the ocean. Such a fun experience!

12) Helping dad get all the horses out of the yard. Dad woke me up one morning at 5am, absolutely freaking out. “The horses from next door – they got out! They’re stampeding all over our lawn and leaving 6″ deep hoof-marks!” Okay, he didn’t say all of that, but it was true! The next hour was spent chasing 7 horses around the yard, to pretty much no avail. Except for the fact that it was absolutely, hysterically funny, and is one of my favorite memories with my dad. :)

13) Flying as Liza in Peter Pan. So this one time, I got to play Liza, the maid, in the musical Peter Pan. There aren’t many perks to being a maid, except for the getting a free trip to Never Neverland! And FLYING there. Legit, I flew. Thanks to ZFX Flying Effects out of Los Angeles, I am one of the few people I know who has literally flown!

14) Cape Cod with Breezy. A few years back, my best friend Breezy and I road tripped it to the Cape for a whole week. It was like we were legit adults. Sorta. We stayed with family friends of hers who pampered us like long-lost relatives. Chocolate-covered strawberries on our pillows and all. :)

15) Almost dying on Sakon Road. Once upon a time, I was driving a car-load of friends back to their respective houses. One of these said friends said I should take a “short-cut,” called Sakon Road. Turns out, this road is not a short-cut for real vehicles, but rather, snowmobiles, dirt bikes, quads, and tractors. The best part about this one-lane dirt “road” was that it had rained for about 10 days prior, making for two miles of fish-tailing and getting mud caked all over our otherwise white car.

16) Catching eight fish while in the same boat as Lorae, and Lorae catching ZERO. Pretty self-explanatory, and honestly, one of the best moments in my life. :) (Don’t worry! It was funny to both of us!)

17) Getting accepted to Newhouse! Good thing, too, because it was the only school I applied to/wanted to get into. I applied early decision, and made it! I found out via a post-it note given me by my dad reading, “You’re IN!” Pretty sure I woke the neighbors that day. :)

18) Blogging ridiculously long posts that might only be fun for me. :) Yeah.. At some point, I thought this was an ingenious idea for a blog post!

19) Carving our tree. The one right outside my apartment. The one where we had to look out for campus police while carving our initials. A tree that now also says, “Marry Me?” as carved by Dylan with a knife a year later. Yeah, I’d say that’s pretty memorable. (Photo copyright Gina Meola)

20) Finding my wedding dress. Which is off-white with orange ruffles running down the sides and lime green polka-dots on its full-length sleeves. No, really. It is spectacular. I’ve almost told Dylan what it really looks like seven times already. I just can’t WAIT to wear it!!

21) Being so glad that this makes 21 memorable memories. Because I am plumb out of them.

22) Getting ready to inhale fondue for my birthday meal! Right NOW. And I’ll leave you with a recent self-portrait so you can remember my 21-year-old self. :)

Enjoy the rest of your weekend! :)

Nancy - Hi Alyse

I loved reaing your 22 memorable moments! I think some of them were hilarious and knowing your folks since, well decades, only made me laugh more. I think I could probably do my own list of at least that many memories of your mom and me. I love the blog! Your mom told me at lunch today that I should read it and now I’m hooked. Can’t wait for more wedding planning stories!

Tidbit Tuesday #11

Hello lovely blog readers! It’s everyone’s favorite day of the week! :) Here we go.

tidbit • n. • \’tid-,bit\ – 1: a choice morsel of food (i.e., ice cream!); 2: a choice or pleasing bit (as of information) :)

A HUGE landmark event happened this past week for Alyse French Photography. Get this: A 10% increase in the number of people who subscribe to my blog via Google Reader! (Granted, the number went up from 10 to 11, but hey, that’s a TEN PERCENT increase right there!!) I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, GR is absolutely fabulous and makes everyday life 129% more exciting. Why? Because it allows you to follow your all-time favorite blogs and never miss a beat!! To set up your GR account, click HERE.

Update on our search for the perfect doggy companion! We’re thinking of getting an English bulldog! Of course they can be rather noisy. (You would be too, if your nose was pushed back that far into your head!) Yes, they do drool. (I nominate Dylan to take care of that part.) But other than that, a little Sullivan bulldog would be just perfect for our little family! They’re a good size, super wrinkly and cute, extremely loyal, very chill dogs! I mean, just look at these puppies!! Any of ya’ll have/had a bulldog? What’s your take?

In West Philadelphia born and raised. On the playground is where I spent most of my dayyys. Chilling out, maxing, relaxing all cool. And doin’ some bloggin’ outside of the school. (See what I did there?) :) All of this to say, Fresh Prince of Bel-Air can turn really, really no-good days into fabulous ones. Not to mention that Will Smith is one of the most insanely talented actors in my book. Yes, I have a book.

Psst! SU WOOPED Georgetown last night. No hatin’, haters. :)

Dylan’s all mad because I stole all of his socks. Literally, I’m not sure any of the pairs in my drawer actually belong to me. Here’s my POV: How about YOU don’t leave them at MY house so I don’t have to WASH them and then WEAR them as my own. :) Actually, keep it up. They’re sooo comfy!

Umm get this! Remember Barnaby Bright? My new musical obsession? Well, my sister has some pretty sweet connections and friendships in the music industry in the N-Y-C, and has invited Barnaby to sing at our wedding!! Our day keeps becoming more and more amazing. I cannot WAIT!! :D

Four days till the big TWO-TWO!! I’m going home for the weekend, but we don’t really have any real plans other than that. Anyone have any sweet birthday-extravaganza ideas?? We’re talking EXTRAVAGANZAAA.

And just a little shout-out to some of my January birthday babies. Namely, my Aunt Colette and the ever-fabulous Jess Zieman! SO blessed to have both of you in my life! :)

Something I’ve been terrible at lately is blogging more than once a week. :( Ya’ll know what I’m talking about. Don’t you worry though, I’mma step up my game. Anyone have any fun topic or question you’d like me to blog about next?! Comment, comment, comment!

This feels like the shortest Tidbit Tuesday ever. But hopefully you’ll forgive me!! I’ll leave you with a itsy-bitsy sneak peek from a workshop I attended on Sunday! Be sure to come back on Thursday for more on that!! :)

Happy Tuesday!!

February 5, 2010 - 11:26 PM

Ashley DiPace - Hey Alyse,

I saw in your blog post that you were looking into getting a dog. Growing up I always wanted a Husky… and then when Chris and I found and got one he ended up trying to kill a few cats and dragging me down slate hill rd. (literally dragging me, I was not on my feet) we had to return him tragically… but we ended up going to a humane society shelter in Delhi (Heart of the Catskills: http://www.heartofthecatskills.org) and we fell in love with the cutest puppy ever. She is a German Shepherd Rottweiler mix (possibly some lab in there). But the point to this lengthy comment is that if anything I would recommend getting a mut as their life expectancy is longer, they’re less prone to diseases like AIDS and Cancer, and they’re less likely to suffer from skin, stomach, and bone issues that are commone in pure breeds. Plus you get to help out a little animal who might not otherwise have a chance. We paid $85 with a $35 deposit for spay/neuter (which is refunded after you get them spayed or neuterd) she came with all of her shots and deworming done. And the people there are wonderful to work with, very good with their animals and have a beautiful trail with which to take the dogs on a trial walk. I highly recommend that!

Tidbit Tuesday #10

Buckle up for the tenth installment of Tidbit Tuesday, a weekly blog post that forces you to listen to all of my random, silly, and fun thoughts and experiences!

For starters, I’m pretty much completely convinced that chapstick only exists to make head honcho chapstick companies heaps and heaps of money! (Is there such a thing as a head honcho chapstick company??) Seriously though, I’m convinced that chapstick only exists to make my lips even dryer so that I’ll keep buying it for the very short-lived relief it brings. Hmph.

Songs of the week: Fireflies by Owl City. Not sure what’s happening to my musical likes. But I totally dig this song! Also! Check out the ever-incredible Barnaby Bright. This husband/wife duo has more talent in both of their pinky toe nails than most people have in their entire bodies. Their song “Yellow Moon” has become one of my current obsessions.

Today marks a week since the completely devastating earthquake in Haiti overwhelmed the Richter scale, and my heart has been broken for all the children-less parents and parent-less children who now abound there. I have to be honest that in the first hours of the aftermath, I was skeptical of all of the “text this word to this number to donate this amount of money” messages all over the internet. But texting HAITI to 90999 insures that $10 will go from your pocket directly to the Red Cross to help with Haiti earthquake relief. Over $20 million has been raised so far through this effort alone. After the initial text, you will get a reply asking for confirmation, and shortly after you should be able to see $10 charged to your cell phone bill. It’s a no-brainer way to make an impact and help the hungry, thirsty, and buried alive. Do it.

So this semester, I’m forcing myself into a legit routine. For health and sanity’s sake. My goals: Wake up at 8, read my bible at 8:15, eat breakfast at 9. Lunch at 11:30. Go to class/work and do not stress out about the little things. (I’ve never been very good at that.) Workout at 4. Eat at 6. Be in bed by 11. And start all over again!

If any of you remember from last week’s Tidbit Tuesday, Dylan and I went to see Avatar in 3D in an IMAX theatre this past Saturday. The animation was incredible. The plot wasn’t as bad as a lot of people said it was. And Dylan even let me bite his hand when I got scared. Overall a fun time. Until I woke up the next morning. As soon as I got up, I was running into things and wobbling all over the place. I’ve never been so dizzy in my life. Add a bit of nausea into the mix and you’ve got one long and super great day. Not. It lasted until mid-yesterday, totalling about 36 hours of post Avatar ickyness. At first, I thought it must have been some sort of really odd virus, completely forgetting how screwed up my eyes get from 3D movies. But then I googled “3D dizzy” and “avatar imax 3d dizzy” autofilled. Apparently, I’m not alone.

My mom will say it to me at least once a day when I’m home. “Take off your coat and stay a while!” I am constantly freezing, so I’ll leave my coat on all day much of the time. It only just hit me the other day that that isn’t entirely normal. :)

On a similar note, I’ve found that I am much more productive when I’m wearing my boots. Don’t ask me why. Just am! So I like to wear my boots. And subsequently look insanely stylish. All the time. ;)

Today is a day I never thought would come. It is my first last day of classes. (!!!) It’s hard to wrap my mind around how fast the past four years have gone! But I’m very, very glad it has! Today kicks off with some good ol’ social psychology at 12:30. Tomorrow is complete with a little intro to historical archeology and drugs and human behavior (interesting combo, eh?). And my week finishes off with picture/multimedia editing. A fairly odd mix of classes, isn’t it?

Lastly, I’ve been having a lot of fun with formspring.me recently, a place where anyone can visit and ask you random anonymous questions. There have been some pretty interesting ones so far. ;) So to get in on the action, click here: formspring.me/alysefrench.

I’ll leave you with one of the headshots I was privileged to take of author Frank Meredith a couple short weeks ago. Frank’s novel, “The Unfinished Work” is a ingenious work of historical fiction and is available at Amazon by clicking HERE.

January 26, 2010 - 8:22 AM

Jessica Z - Alyse, yet again we have the same thoughts, this time dealing with chapstick and “Fireflies” by Owl City. Oh and ps- I have their CD if you want me to send it to you!

January 19, 2010 - 2:50 PM

jessica guzman - note to the chapstick people:

Dear chapstick people:

I do not like you. you are cruel much like a bag of doritos or a package of oreos. it is my belief that you all work together and place some chemical that produces a stange need to use you or eat you over and over and over again…all the while, knowing that the initial moment of lovely relief/pleasure will be just that…a moment…and then the addictive cycle begins all over again…knowing that attached will be the torture of an extra pound or screaming dry lips, but i take you out and put you back on again…or eat an entire sleeve of you. so, today i write you to tell you this..WE ARE THROUGH. THIS RELATIONSHIP IS OVER! We will rondeveau no more! for I am now a beloved friends of Burt, Carmex and Vaseline…they treat me better!

Farewell chapstick. You are no longer part of my cool crowd!

Jessica
