Creating a Killer Wedding Day Timeline

You’re a bride. Your days are spent researching centerpiece ideas, changing your mind over colors for the 17th time, and sampling every flavor of wedding cake imaginable. It. is. the. LIFE! Well, sort of. :) Let me be the first to say I KNOW wedding planning is overwhelmingly stressful. So I thought it might be helpful if I tackled one of the largest items on your list from a photographer’s perspective. That item being, your wedding day timeline.

The following sample timeline is one that I’ve found works best for ME as a wedding photographer. There is definitely room for adjustments depending on weather, transportation needs for you and your wedding party/family, and most essentially, sunset time. I’m a HUGE proponent of portraits shot in natural light. But all in all, what is broken down below is a timeline that prioritizes what will best help you remember this most important day in your life: YOUR IMAGES.

Also keep in mind that while the length of time I have allotted for various things may sound crazy, it is essential for ensuring enough cushion should the inevitable happen. I.e., You think it will only take five minutes to put on your dress, but you find a random wrinkle that MUST be steamed. The groom and his entire entourage get stuck in traffic due to an unforeseen parade right before your first look. Or Uncle Bobby goes MIA, but you need him for family formals. :) I have been through this with enough brides to tell you, something unexpected might definitely happen. But the beauty is that if we nail down a solid timeline that allows for cushion ahead of time, your day will be that much less stressful. That much more enjoyable. And that much more memorable through photographs.

Without further ado, a wedding day timeline that assumes that all prep, as well as the pre-ceremony, ceremony, and reception festivities occur at the same venue. It also includes a first look, which I truly believe is the best option for ALL brides and grooms. (Here’s why!) I’ve also included in parenthesis the exact length of time needed for specific segments of coverage, should your ceremony start time differ from the sample.

12:00PM – Begin bride’s/bridesmaids’ hair

1:00PM – Begin bride’s/bridesmaids’ makeup

1:30PM – Photographers arrive to photograph details and final prep (1.5 hours)

3:00PM – Bride puts on dress (0.5 hours)

3:30PM – Bride & groom’s first look/portraits (45 minutes)

4:15PM – Wedding party portraits (0.5 hours)

4:45PM – Family formal portraits (45 minutes)

5:30PM – Final primping while wedding guests arrive

6:00PM – Ceremony begins (1 hour-ish before sunset)

6:30PM – Short cocktail hour

7:00PM – Grand entrance/first dance/prayer

7:15PM – Meal is served

8:00PM – Toasts/special dances

8:30PM – More dancing

9:00PM – Cake cutting/bouquet toss/more dancing

10:00PM – Photographers leave

Our full day coverage typically translates to about eight or nine hours. This timeline spans 8.5 hours exactly. It’s my hope that this post helps you realize that all you want out of your wedding day images is more than possible with a well-planned timeline! And your photographers are always willing to help you in this capacity! :) Happy Sunday to all!

Jess Z. - So you know how I have an obsession with planning/ being early to almost everything in life? Well, this is amazing and while I have yet to receive a certain question, I would LOVE it if I could make this into a Word document and put it in my “planning” folder, with your name written all over it! Whatd’ya say to being (yet again) in my planning files?! (Because yes, you are already in there under “Photographer,” which is also the absolute shortest list that I have so far.) <3

The Parador Wedding: Kata & Drew

It happens at nearly every wedding. Somewhere in between I Gotta Feeling and YMCA, I am forced to choke back tears. Luckily for me, I keep my camera in front of my face at all times. Well, that, and I swear by waterproof mascara. It’s something about watching a room full of people dancing with wild abandon, having the time of their lives in joyful celebration of two becoming one. It’s just.. Joy.

Kata and Drew‘s wedding was one I’ll remember always. Yes, because of the images. Yes, because of the cuh-razy dance party it became. But mostly because of how it made me feel to be a part of it. There is power and joy in choosing to love. In choosing to honor. In choosing to celebrate. And in the words of Kata’s father, “There’s a big difference between happiness and joy. And today? We feel joy.” Nothing could’ve been more true.

K & D – Oh, if only I could properly convey how completely honored we are to have captured such a meaningful and powerful day in your lives! We are beyond excited to see how God will continue to work in you and through you, as one. Much love and many, many hugs. XOXO!! Alyse & Dylan

I absolutely diiied when I saw Kata’s dress. Just wait until you actually see her IN it. Yowza.

Dark blue pumps and the most gorgeous antique chair you’ve ever seen? Yes, please!
Are you serious, Kata? You are a supermodel.
Dylan’s shot. Jealous. :)
The Parador has quickly become one of my favorite venues to work at. And the staff is just a dream come true!
Drew looking ready to see his bride for their first look!
Favorite. Moment. EVER.
Don’t they look amazing together?
Kata, you’re beautiful. And Drew? Your nose, teeth, and chin are too. ;) No, but really.
These two made our jobs so easy. Such naturals.
Special thank you to our trusty sidekick, Kaley, for joining us for the day.
Ask any client of mine, and they’ll tell you I say “BAM” about 100 times per shoot. This, was one of those times…
Can I just stop and say… Dear bridal party, you were all so fabulous and kind and drop. dead. gorgeous. Thank you for everything! And thank you for this picture. :)
Dylan is responsible for these next two shots right before the ceremony. Luuurve.
Most beautiful backdrop a photog could ask for!
That Dylan kid is good, isn’t he? ;)
BAAAM.
Bergner & Johnson nailed the floral.
And Behind the Bash catering did an equally fabulous job.
Both Kata and Drew’s families were so welcoming and lovely. I was so happy to capture such an intimate moment between Kata and her father.
But OHHH, the dancing! I have NEVER… Seriously, never, seen such a dance party in mah life. I had to work pretty hard to refrain from tearin’ it up myself.
Grady Gaines & The Texas Upsetters, ladies and gentlemen. Had me oo’ing and aw’ing the entire time.
Bahahaha. That is all. :)
And one more, for the joy of it all.

Happy Thursday!

Houston Wedding at The Parador | 7centerpieces - [...] How gorgeous is this next couple! And they produced an equally gorgeous wedding.  The bride’s uber-chic, Grecian-style dress sets the tone for this contemporary affair.  The white and green florals by Bergner and Johnson compliment, yet don’t overpower, the beautiful venue.  And speaking of the venue, The Parador, with its Mediterranean-meets-Byzantine style, creates the perfect backdrop for this winter affair.  With its blue and gold accents, dreamy florals, and a cake display so pretty I wanted to applaud the design team, this wedding oozes style and grace.  And let’s not forget about the beautiful photographs!  Alyse French perfectly captured the elements of the day…and the love that is so clearly apparent between the couple.  Check out even more images on her blog. Tidbit Tuesday #63

I knew it was only a matter of time. When you’re single, your Facebook targeted ads are for online dating. When you’re engaged they’re all about losing weight for your upcoming wedding. And when you’re newly married, they’re all, “Isn’t it time for a baby already?!” F’real, Facebook? I don’t believe you’re supposed to be hinting at having babies before my own mother does. Try again in five years please. ;)

Sully’s second vet appointment has come and gone. Updates include but are not limited to: He peed on their office rug. He decided he was bigger and badder than a full-grown pit bull. And he’s now 19 pounds. AKA, double what he was when we first brought him home. Which reminds me! A bride recently called me out on not posting nearly enough images of Sully on the blog. Let’s just say we have something pretty awesome in the works…

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it a bajillion times more.. One of my all time favorite resources for all things inspiring is Google Reader, the easiest and most fun way to keep tabs on your favorite blogs. Recently, I’ve become obsessed with a new blog fave called Better After, which features before and after images of thrift store finds turned FAB-ulous. New content is published approximately three times a day. Which is perfectly awesome for a before/after junkie like myself. :)

Speaking of blogs, I’m always in the market for new sources of inspiration, whether photo-related or design/food/wedding-related. Pretty please feel free to leave your best blog-following suggestions in the comment section! EVEN if it’s your own!

When I was a kid, I wanted braces. Bad. I was enthralled by how fabulous it might be to wear different colored rubber-bands in my mouth. My brace-wearing friends thought I was crazy… I ALSO wanted glasses. At the very least, I wanted reading glasses so I could look super sophisticated. Again, I didn’t technically need them, and I soon learned that wearing prescription-strength lenses is actually bad for eyes that can see just fine without them. Even so, to this very day, these Warby Parker boutique quality, vintage inspired frames have me chomping at the bit. I want, I waaant.

Last Friday, Dylan and I had dinner at Olive Garden. I don’t care who you are, those commercials eat at you until you decide to do something about it! All I needed to hear was “pear and gorgonzola ravioli with shrimp” and we were headed out the door. Once we arrived, I realized that having a whole batch of bread sticks, a bowl of chicken and gnocchi soup, an entire entrée, and a frozen margarita wasn’t healthy on a completely. empty. stomach. (I’d forgotten to eat that day..) Needless to say, I swore off Olive Garden for the rest of my life. And totally ate Dylan’s leftover chicken and shrimp carbonara for lunch the next day.

Song of the Week: Feeling Good by Nina Simone. We’re not talking the Michael Bublé version, or even the Jennifer Hudson version. We’re talking the original, 1965 version. Something about Nina‘s voice and the sway of the music makes me feel way more classy than I really am. :)

I leave you with this image taken mere seconds after Kata and Drew‘s amazingly sweet first look before their beautiful wedding this past Saturday. There is much more where this came from all set for Thursday. And believe you me, you do NOT want to miss this one!

Happy Tuesday, Internet!

February 22, 2011 - 1:47 PM

Imani - Alyse! Thank you so much for the Before After blog mention! I never knew about it before, and I love it! And I don’t have a blog suggestion.. but Steph introduced me to pinterest.com. And I’m in LOVE with it. It’s essentially an online inspiration board.. so addicting, and so great!

February 22, 2011 - 12:32 PM

Kristin Nicole - Can’t wait to see the rest.

February 22, 2011 - 11:36 AM

Kat - Darn you for showing me that before/after blog! Now my whole day will be wasted looking for my own projects :)
