Simple Things

Today is beautiful. Hurricane Don is on his way to Corpus Christi, so Houston’s skies are dark and overcast. All the blinds are closed, and the only light I see comes from my computer screen and the candles flickering on the dining room table. I’m wearing Dylan’s shirt. I’ve worn his shirts for the past three days. They are his and I love them. Plus I’m bad at doing laundry. ;) Ray LaMontagne is singing “Hold You In My Arms” and Sully is warming my feet while laying in his favorite place in our whole home. Right underneath my desk. I’ve been productive enough today to last about three days. The rush a photographer gets from getting caught up on editing, mailing out discs, and updating insurance policies is unreal. Oh, and lest I forget – THE HOUSE IS CLEAN. Cuh-lean. Clean. If you’ve ever wanted to pay us a visit, now would be the best time..

I wasn’t planning on blogging today. But I just needed to write this down. It’s the simple things. And today, I am so thankful…

Tidbit Tuesday #85

When I was about 12-years-old, my parents decided my siblings and I were old enough to understand analogies concerning toothpaste and the fact that once you use hurtful words towards one another, you can’t take it back. We were each given a paper plate and a tube of toothpaste, and told to squeeze all of its contents onto our plates. The ah-ha moment was supposed to happen when attempting to refill the tubes with the plated paste. But I was much too cool for such an analogy, and spent an hour trying to prove my parents wrong. I got every last minty molecule back inside that Crest tube. And whenever I think about it, I feel sorta awesome and rebellious. :)

Gosh that Sully is a tricky fellow. Every time we catch him being naughty, and he SEES us catch him? He stops. But only for as long as we stare at him. Guess what little buddy? I will still know you were chewing on your gate because you’re allergic to plastic and your whole snout and jowl combination will turn bright red… That JUST happened.

I know I’ve written about it before, but I am in LOVE with Pinterest. I spent the better half of a very lazy Sunday afternoon creating all sorts of boards I just can’t stop adding to. With pins I am DETERMINED to make happen someday… And I’ve already started. Yesterday I whipped up a little balsamic and parmesan roasted cauliflower via Pinterest inspiration. And it was heavenly. Speaking of Pinterest (not cauliflower), one of my favorite blogs in the blogosphere, Young House Love, has issued a design challenge to actually create something we’ve pinned rather than just gawk at it on our screens. I am SO in. I promise to blog about it, and I promise it will be more involved than cauliflower! Anyone else up to it?!

I am SO excited for September to just happen already. Not only will Dylan and I get to travel back north for his brother’s wedding, but my sister will be visiting for about a week at the end of the month. She will FINALLY get to meet her dogphew. :) And experience Houston for all it’s worth. My goal is to get all my family to move here within the next ten years. So I might have my job cut out for me. To all my native Houstonian readers – what are some legit Houstonian things to do when visiting?

Spotify… I have NO idea how it’s legal. But apparently it is! And that makes me a happy girl, because it is the most INCREDIBLE thing in the world. And we don’t even have to sneak it behind our 8th grade computer teachers’ backs! ;) I’m currently rediscovering all the music I used to listen to back then as well. Which brings me to this week’s song of the week.

Song of the Week: In the House of Tom Bombadil by Nickel Creek. Once upon a time, my dad surprised me with a trip to Vermont, just the two of us, to see Nickel Creek live in concert. It’s one of those memories I’ll never forget. Yes, because of the time spent with my dad. But perhaps even more so because of all the drunk women who fell on us at a BLUEGRASS concert. I mean, seriously? Bluegrass? Anyway! In the House of Tom Bombadil is one of Nickel Creek‘s most amaaazing songs. And you should listen to it HERE! :)

And here is a behind the scenes sneak of Dylan and I in action at one of our recently blogged shoots of Mustard Seed Photography. It makes me laugh every single time because it totally encapsulates our relationship. He is too good for me. :)

Happy Tuesday!!

Safari Texas Ranch Wedding: Maggie & Paul

I’m not sure the words exist. Believe me, I’ve tried to find them… Maggie and Paul’s wedding day was one of the most inspiring things I’ve ever shot. There was just SO much beauty everywhere. Yes, I’m talking about the details – the shoes, the J. Crew dress, the colors, the venue itself… Nothing makes a photog tick like creative inspiration at every turn. But I’m talking so much more about what this day meant for Maggie and Paul. The anticipation. The longing…

Early during the getting-ready process I asked the bride how she was feeling, fully expecting the whole “I’m nervous!” answer. But instead she stared me right in the eyes and simply said, “I am just so excited to marry Paul.” It floored me… And when Paul told me the exact same thing about Maggie not an hour later, with an additional “She’s amazing…” Well, I think it was then that I lost all words to describe this day. To describe the thankfulness in my heart for Maggie and Paul, for love itself, and for being able to be surrounded by it so wholly, so often. To M&P, I hope these sneak peek pictures are a good start. All my love!! XOXO!!

The day started off at An Albert Luiz Salon in Sugar Land, the most jaw-droppingly awesome salon I’ve ever photographed.

This is Melissa. She did an absolutely PERFECT job on Maggie’s hair and makeup. :)
Isn’t she gorgeous?
Maggie’s mom and maid of honor stopped in to say hello. Just love this moment.
Okay. THE SHOES. I don’t know if it’s the ruffles, that incredible shade of blue, or the surroundings, but these shoes had me shooting them for a solid 15. Which in wedding-timeline-speak is a veeery LONG time. ;)
Flowers by Nora Anne KILLED this bouquet.
The incredible J. Crew dress, and just one more shoe shot. I promise. :)
One of my favorite moments captured of the entire day. Maggie, you are radiant. And beautiful.
No this isn’t the groom. It’s Maggie’s bridesman, Jitin, lookin’ sharp.
Can I just say a big collective “I LOVE YOU” to this bridal party? You guys were so welcoming and fun. :)
The below-right shot makes me smile. This is the mother of the bride with her sister. And of course, a little bubbly.
It’s finally time to meet the groom, Paul! Who also invited his sister Jennifer to be a groomswoman. :)
I’ve always made fun of my mom for telling me about 100 times a year that I look like some random made-for-TV-movie star, mixed with a little bit of some grocery bagger at Price Chopper. But then I realized I do this to everyone I meet… Case in point? Paul is a mix between my old 8th grade math teacher Mr. Gilchrist, and Robert from Everybody Loves Raymond. Maybe that’s part of why I like him so much. :)
The chapel at Safari Texas Ranch. LOVED this view.
Seeing his bride. :)
Maggie and Paul had a Jewish ceremony. This shot captures the tradition of walking around each other three times after coming down the aisle.
The ketubah (AKA, the traditional Jewish marriage contract) was the most gorgeous thing I’d ever seen.
Joy.
And some more joy. The recessional is always one of my favorite things to shoot for this very reason. :)

Then it was family formal time! I just LOVE this image of the sweet Bolstad fam. And the best part? They set this up entirely themselves.

Portrait time! Maggie and Paul were SO relaxed for the camera, and it made for some pretty fun images.
Seriously? Seriously. Seeeriouslyyy. You two are so beautiful together.
Favorite number one.
Their laughs are the best!!
Okay, I take it back. THIS is my favorite number one. :)
The reception was held in the lodge, and Danielle and her crew gussied it up peeerfectly.
The zebra/cheeta print chairs almost came home with me.
Sweetest first dance ever. Again, no words.
The NiteBeat Band! SOO good.
The toasts killed me. This is Paul’s father. I’m pretty sure the whole room was in tears by the time his speech was over. Yours truly, included.
The horah! Terrifying, but so fun!!
And then they danced the night away. Literally.

After re-reading through this post, I’d like to formally document the following tally of how often I used the words (or derivatives of the words) fun, perfect, beautiful, LOVE, and favorite: Fun (6) Perfect (4) Beautiful (5) LOVE (10) Favorite (6). I suppose I may have found the words after all… Happy Friday!! :)

Marianne Graham - Maggie is unfortgettable- easily a bride that every photographer dreams of meeting and being graced with the opportunity of working with. As someone who knows her and a fellow wedding professional, I can honestly say your pictures are gorgeous. You did an amazing job capturing Maggie’s smile, eyes, and vivacious spirit. Even though I wasn’t there, I could feel her happiness and their sheer joy and love for one another. Thank you for sharing your beautiful photos of their big day!

Jitin Hingorani - Dear Alyse:

Wow, I’m just blown away by this photo journal. Your blog has such a unique perspective, and it showcases this wonderful day with such sincerely and simplicity. Thanks for your excellent pictures. I work with some wedding planners who plan South Asian weddings, and I’m definitely going to recommend you to them. I shared your blog on my Facebook page and got some amazing responses. Thanks again for being the best wedding photographer I’ve ever met (and I’ve been to my fair share of weddings)!!!

Sincerely,
Jitin, the Bridesman
