Tomball Family Portraits: The Dowell Siblings

When Dylan and I were preparing to leave Sully for TEN days over Christmas, I was beside myself with worry and panic and tears. I had absolutely no idea how I could leave my child for that long. I’m sorry, but he is… My child. :) BUT! In came the Dowell family. To the rescue!! We’ve known the Dowell’s for about a year now. They’re the family who bred and raised Sully (formerly known by them as Lil’Ben) until he was about two months old. And they’re the family who welcomed him back home with open arms when he needed a place to stay. I CANNOT tell you what a load off my mind this was!! This shoot of the Dowell siblings was a by-product of our insane thankfulness for everything they’ve done for us! So THANK YOU, DOWELL’S!! We hope you enjoy. :) XOXO!!
Jessica, the eldest, is a GORGE senior in high school who’s a boss at anything math-related. She dreams of being a coordinator for a modeling agency one day.This is Kelly, the youngest. She’ll kick your butt in a swim meet any day of the week. She’s a middle-schooler. And her face is FLAW-LESS.Meet Treavor! He’s the middle-child. (Middles, represent!) He’s about to be a senior. He hunts duck. And he’s in the process of getting his pilot’s license!!Here’s the gang all together. Looking quite stylish, might I add…The areas surrounding the Dowell’s beautiful home in Tomball were perfect for this super relaxed, fun shoot!After walking to a nearby park, we hear grunts from a distance. We look up, and Sully’s parents, Bentley and Roxy are running at us FULL-SPEED. :)Now tell me that Sully doesn’t look JUST like his daddy?!Shot during a rare moment when the pups were sitting still. Tidbit Tuesday #109

I feel so refreshed today! I’m sure sleeping in until 8:17AM has something to do with it. (My internal clock wakes me up at 8AM every day without fail.) And I bet my caprese salad breakfast of champions with a shot of water, Centrum and ungodly amounts of vitamin D has something to do with it as well. But mostly, I think it’s because yesterday was AWESOME. My birthday was spent cleaning – something that ordinarily sucks, but surprisingly DIDN’T yesterday BECAUSE it was my birthday – and baking!! Flowers and chocolate were delivered from my sweet man, followed by a fancy hors d’oeuvres party with my girls from church. OH. And cake. Puh-leeenty of cake!! Cake that I believe I’ll have to schedule a snack break for right. about. now… Ahh, that’s goood.

I have a confession. One of my current pastimes is stalking the Instagrams associated with various celebrities’ Twitter accounts. I have no idea why. I suppose I just find it fascinating that these people have actual, real lives. My most recent stalkings? Well.. They’re actually people I have no connection or loyalty to at all. *Cough cough* Say, Selena Gomez or Kourtney Kardashian? *Cough cough.* Which brings me to – I GET MY IPHONE ON SUNDAY!! And although I can’t promise my Instagrams will be as interesting as a celeb’s… You can bet anything that I’m ready to jump on that bandwagon! YAAHOOO!!!

You know how I can get slightly obsessive about things I love? Like eating quiche for two meals a day, every day, for two weeks? Or listening to a two-song playlist on repeat all day long? I have a similar obsession with my TV shows… Especially when they end after FIVE glorious seasons of entertaining me. This past Friday, Chuck – otherwise known as the best show on television – ended for good. And I cried. And I criied. And I criiied. And then I locked myself in the bathroom and forced myself to get a grip. I’m much, much better now. For those of you who were concerned… :)

Song of the Week: Our God by Chris Tomlin. The worship team at Kaleo played this song on Sunday morning and although I’d heard it before, it resonated with me in a whole new way. I’ve been hooked ever since, and am committed to going into my 24th year with these lyrics as my anthem. “Our God is greater. Our God is stronger. God, You are higher than ANY other. Our God is Healer. Awesome in power. Our God.” AMEN, Internet!! To listen to this keeper, go HERE!!

This Thursday I’ll be sharing a peek into a super sweet and casual shoot with Sully’s breeder’s family! More specifically – the Dowell siblings! But until then, enjoy this small taste of the fun. Memorial Park Engagement: Kylee & Casey

Earlier this week, I fiiinally got to meet the Kylee I’d exchanged emails with for so long… The Kylee with the gorgeous head of hair and fabulously keen fashion sense. The Kylee who’d met her charming fiancé Casey in – WAIT FOR IT – kindergarten. I mean seriously? I’ve been aww’ing ever since! We met up at Memorial Park to capture their engagement pictures and I’m SO happy to share with you all my favorite images from the day. The light was di-VINE. The subjects were nothing short of completely adorable. AND, might I add, these two were SO sweetly accommodating of a photographer hobbling around on two wounded legs. Legit. They are the best. :) K & C – I had such a blast with you guys! And I hope you love your sneak peek!! XOXO!!

When we arrived at Memorial, we noticed about 3,000 trees missing! (P.S. I didn’t make up that number. The guy working at the gym told me!) Apparently this drought we’ve been having was too much for the trees to survive. But we didn’t let the change in scenery deter us. I LOVE finding different ways to shoot at a familiar location. And I think the homes lining the parameter of the park worked PERFECTLY with Kylee and Casey’s über coolness. ;)The FIERCENESS of this girl… And Casey? You aren’t too bad yourself!One thing I observed about Kylee and Casey during our shoot is how simply they “get” each other. Their love is based on the sweetest friendship. :)Huge thanks to some of my favorites ladies to work with – Sunkissed & Made Up – for Kylee’s gorgeous hair and makeup!After a quick change, we headed further into the park. And then commenced a love-fest with this LIIIGHT. I am just in awe of its buttery goodness!!So happy with this moment captured. It just makes me feel content. I really have the best job. Evaaa.Let’s consider this a small taste of their first dance as man and wife in May. Kylee was able to share with me some pretty exciting details about their day, and I couldn’t be more excited! Blush pinks and grays? I mean, reeeally.Kylee. What can be said that hasn’t already been told you your entire life? You’re gorgeous, girl!And we’ll end on the cutest note of all. :)

Tidbit Tuesday #108

I feel like there’s just so much to share from this mostly uneventful January! Maybe that’s because the typically uneventful tidbits in life have taken on a semi-humorous sitcom-like vibe as of late. For instance! Last week, when holding my personal steam mask for my (now GONE) bronchitis in my hands as opposed to placing it on a flat surface like ALL the warnings say… I flinched and sent scalding hot water all over my legs. My laryngytic vocal chords prevented me from screaming as loudly as I wanted to, and my foggy brain prevented me from checking to see if Sully’s eyeballs had melted out before shoving him in his crate. The doc’s verdict was first degree rather than the second degree all signs pointed to, which was a HUGE answer to my frantic prayers. AND, my voice is now strong enough to sing Mary had a Little Lamb about two octaves below my usual range. This is PROGRESS, Internet!! End of update. :)

Yesterday I took Sully to get his nails ground down. And like clockwork, as soon as he jumps out of the car, people stop what they’re doing and stare and laugh at him. If I didn’t know any better, I’d swear they were making fun of how overweight he is. (We’re TRYING!) But I’ve decided to believe they’re in awe of his cuteness, his heifer-like spots (no pun intended), and the way he walks like he’s on a mission! Protruding chin up. Ears back. Smiling the whole time.

As my birthday approaches… And as unopened packages labeled “Open 1/30!” pile up on my desk.. Well? I get more and more excited. I’m not entirely sure why I get so pumped for my birthday each year. I think it’s the fact that my 24th year will be a new beginning. Not that 23 was bad at all! I loved it. :) But 24?! It’s like I’ll finally be an adult or something! ;) Dylan and I plan to celebrate on Saturday since he’ll be working on Monday. And if all goes according to plan, we’ll wake up to bagels, eggs and bacon magically prepared for us/me. We’ll spend the morning on a birthday shopping-spree. We’ll prep a fab lunch with my new kitchen gadgetry. We’ll watch the ‘Cuse game. We’ll rent a movie we’ll actually pay attention to! And then we’ll be off to dinner with fancy shoes on.

Song of the Week: Without You by David Guetta featuring Usher. Oh, like you didn’t know my “songs of the week” are basically always determined by whatever was sung on Glee the week before… ;) While I like Lea Michelle’s version more, I am in LOVE with this new hit. No longer do I only associate David Guetta with a banner ad that always interrupts my Spotify playlist! Without You is a strangely-emotional masterpiece. Listen/watch HERE aaand HERE. :)

Starting Over: 101 goals in 1001 days!!

Hi friends! As I’ve been over-excitedly hinting at these past few weeks with the newness of 2012 upon us, I’ve just now drafted a brand new 101 in 1001. AKA, 101 goals I hope to accomplish in the next 1001 days! My first and most recent list was created back in March 2010, and although I fulfilled about a quarter of those goals, about 75% of them became tasks I either wasn’t at all passionate about any longer or things that just didn’t seem achievable within the given timeframe. So! I’ve decided to create a list of goals that are much more specific, measurable, and reasonable! Because let’s face it.. I was never going to “go on a hike” or “join a book club.” I mean, f’real… And just a fun little note about this list. You just might call it my “To Do Before Having Babies” list. Because so long as things go according to our plan, that is exactly how the timing would work out! BAYUM. Let’s do this thang!!

OH! And before you read on and see that I’ve only written 75 goals… Be aware that I’ve given myself the permission to re-evaluate this list on a regular basis. Adding to and taking away from it as I feel necessary! Otherwise, I’d probably try filling the gap with “capture and befriend a pet squirrel.” Just to push it to 101. And that’s just silly! So, here we go, Internet! Here are the goals I hope to achieve by October 16, 2014!! Let me know what you think!!

1. Change my name (I’m slow when it comes to these things!)
2. Start keeping a journal
3. Get a freaking iPhone already
4. Buy our first home
5. Get a sectional sofa that’s more conducive to cuddling
6. Find fun ways to display personal photos in our home and then DO it
7. Purge our home of unnecessary clutter on a regular basis (AKA, live SIMPLY!)
8. Create a legit cleaning schedule and try to stick to it
9. Make a habit of doing my laundry on a regular basis (I work from home, okay?)
10. Complete five DIY projects for our home
11. Give only handmade gifts for either Christmas 2012 or Christmas 2013
12. Learn to knit
13. Send out our raw wedding day images for editing by Colorati
14. Design and order our wedding album
15. Give wedding albums to both sets of parents
16. Do something nice for someone anonymously
17. Randomly send someone some small item they mention wanting
18. Mail someone a card and small gift to encourage them in some random way
19. Read through the whole Bible
20. Learn to keep Sundays as a day of rest
21. Literally count my blessings
22. Read five new books (AKA, try to love reading)
23. Cook through one full Barefoot Contessa cookbook
24. Make a habit of cooking more homemade meals for my husband
25. Make a legit wedding-worthy cake of fanciness
26. Hold a Martha Stewart-like dinner party for a small group of close friends
27. Enroll Sully in obedience school
28. Get Sully to let me cut his nails (it’s a nightmare!)
29. Get a second, larger dog and name him Windsor
30. Take a stay-cation
31. Visit Europe (namely, Ireland and Denmark)
32. Visit Seattle (I’ve always, always wanted to!)
33. Go back to NYC for a weekend
34. See Newsies on Broadway
35. Be in a wedding (!!)
36. Throw one kick-butt bridal shower
37. Photograph one of my dear friends’ delivery of twins
38. Take a martial arts or self-defense course
39. Become CPR certified
40. Try out a yoga/zumba class
41. Reach and maintain goal weight of 1_5 pounds (Like I’d really let that cat out of the bag!) :)
42. Make a habit of drinking more water every day
43. Make a habit of taking my vitamins every day
44. Make a habit of exercising three days a week
45. Grow out my hair as long as it once was and DO NOT CUT IT (only trim)
46. Schedule a massage to enjoy after a particularly hard-on-my-back wedding
47. Be better at keeping a schedule like someone who DOESN’T work from home (AKA, showering in the morning, getting dressed in real clothes, etc.)
48. Force myself to work outside of our home semi-regularly
49. Get updated head shots now that I’m 20 pounds lighter and my hair is longer
50. Shoot an updated promo video
51. Give away one free wedding package on the blog (through a specific selection process)
52. Conceptualize three shoots, have them styled by local vendors, and shoot them
53. Improve (AKA, finish) killer product packaging
54. Develop after-booking gifts/client kits
55. Purchase canvas gallery wraps for our office space
56. Double AFP’s profitability by at least 50%
57. Increase Twitter followers to 1000
58. Increase Facebook followers to 3000
59. Increase Google Reader subscribers to 300
60. Institute three new blog categories
61. Purchase 27” iMac for in-office work
62. Upgrade one of our Nikon D700’s to a Nikon D4
63. Begin using ShootQ
64. Implement the Git Kit
65. Take a seminar on time-management
66. Institute an internship program
67. Start Alyse French Photography/Windsor Collective workshops
68. Revamp my album ordering process (possible outsourcing)
69. Order new sample wedding albums
70. Create a “for photographers” page for our website
71. Create a “press” page for our website
72. Learn to shoot landscape orientation with more intentionality and creativity
73. Experiment with film photography
74. Blog about the majority of these goals as they are accomplished
75. Routinely evaluate the goals on this list and write down new ones (AKA, goals 76 through 101) ;)

Tidbit Tuesday #107

Last night, I had a dream. I know… Go figure. :) In this dream, Dylan and I had a baby boy named Stanley Cullum Morrissey. Yes, Stanley. As in Stanley Black & Decker (someone’s watching too much HGTV). And Cullum. As in one of my most-loved musical heroes, Jamie Cullum. Poor Stan-the-man wasn’t fed until he was over a day old (because I simply forgot) and was actually missing in action much of the time without anyone batting an eye. Needless to say, I woke up pretty darn scared about the future of our REAL children. Who will hopefully have better names… God bless them.

So, I’m drafting a new 101 in 1001 goal list and I couldn’t be more excited about it! I hope to explain more as to why I’m starting completely over when I share it on the blog on Thursday. But for now, I’m about 46 goals short! Apart from learning to knit and purchasing a sectional sofa more conducive to cuddling (because those are already on my list), what are some goals I should be considering?? (Note: This is not an invitation to tell me to lay off the Toaster Strudel.)

I think I’ve managed to inform most people who’d need to know, but for the sake of re-informing my sister for the seventh time… I am currently phoneless. Okay, that’s not exaaactly true. I am currently rocking a $15 Tracfone! The reason is three-fold. One – I’ve gone through three Blackberries in the past year and a half. They are all absolutely dreadful phones. Two – Verizon refused to give me my upgrade three weeks early even though I tried to charm them with my scratchy new laryngitic voice. And three – I sort of happen to like it! It’s a bare-bones, call-911-if-you’re-home-alone-and-start-choking kind of phone. And although I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t be able to speak if I were choking, I happen to find some sort of comfort in that.

Dylan and I saw The Iron Lady on Saturday. And although so much of it felt irrelevant to me – I was 2-years-old when Margaret Thatcher left office – this film was incredibly beautiful and inspiring and heavy. The legacy left by both Thatcher AND my favorite actress of all time – Miss Meryl Streep, ladies and gentlemen – have had me thinking ever since. Also… If you plan on seeing this movie in theaters and insist on bringing in a box of Nerds, be sure to only take a swig during the parliament scenes when everyone is SCREAMING at each other. That way, no one will hear you. :)

Crystal Springs Wedding: Michelle & J’Max

Making friends with our brides and grooms is definitely one of my favorite perks of the job. We’ve known Michelle and J’Max for about a year now and can testify to their great taste in pizza, friends (clearly..) and each other. ;) Dylan and I were so grateful to be able to capture their long-awaited wedding day on New Year’s Eve and are pretty proud and excited about these images! M & J – We love you. No, really. We love you… And we THANK YOU for the opportunity to document your new beginning. We are pumped to see the life God has for you, together, to unfold. A little hint of New Year’s Eve decor, and the most gorgeous Vera Wang gown for the most gorgeous bride.It was love at first sight for these Carlos Santana’s. Not going to lie.. I kinda want to make this picture on the left my OWN profile picture. ;)Such a sweet and fun group of girls. Thank you for everything, ladies!!The gentlemen were looking extra sharp that day. Also… I could have shot in this light foreverrr.J’Max is by far one of the most personable, friendly guys we know. And I think it shows on the bottom right. :)The groomsmen gifts were definitely befitting for a New Year’s Eve wedding. And waaay dapper.After first shooting the girls and then the guys, it was time for the first look! Michelle and J’Max were actually the couple I wrote about in THIS post on why I believe a first look is the BEST choice a bride and groom can make for their wedding. I’m glad I could convince them. Because it got me this sweet shot. :)Planning for a first look within M and J’s wedding day timeline allowed for the following series of portraits to be shot in natural light. With their ceremony starting at 7:30PM, it was definitely the way to go! Plus, I’m kinda’ giddy about them…I. Cannot. Take. The. Fierceness. AND! Many thanks goes out to POP Video, for being so easy to work with and capturing the fierceness right alongside us! We can’t WAIT to see your marvelous work!!J’Max sure knows how to turn on the GQ-smolder just like THAT.Have I mentioned that I love Crystal Springs? If one thing is true, we did not want for beautiful scenery.Give it up for the most punctual and well-dressed wedding party EVER! ALSO – do you SEE that adorable 2012 top-hat? Michelle went all out. ;)Upon arrival, guests were greeted by the most fabulous display of old clocks alongside M and J’s guestbook. Oh, and I swear I asked Dylan what time it was about three times before realizing I could look in ANY direction and find out for myself. ;)A ribbon backdrop for the altar, and one breath-taking Michelle, flashing us a smile.
The image on the right? I think J’Max was happy or something… ;)My favorite part about a wedding ceremony is right after the vows have been made. No one really celebrates until the pronouncement of “husband and wife” or the kiss… But after those vows? That’s it! You’re MARRIED!!! BAM.This setup… The tables, the chairs, the centerpieces with baby’s breath and clocks and gold-colored ornaments. It was all too perfect. Special thanks to All Star Catering as well. The food was DE-LISH.You know what they say.. Ranunculus are a girl’s best friend. Unless those aren’t ranunculus. :)Guests absolutely ate up these photo booth props. And I assure you, there was glitter everywheeere.Frost Bake Shoppe changed my life with these cupcakes. Tastes like MORE.Time for the first dance. These two spared no fancy-ness with their moves! Also, a big shout out to our DJ friends at Rock N’ Robin.It’s moments like these that validate why I do what I do. You can read the emotion so clearly. Just LOVE these two!!

Tidbit Tuesday #106

It has been a LONG time, bloggy friends. And I THANK you for your patience during my recent blogging hiatus. The past two weeks have contained more Tidbit Tuesday-worthy moments than I can even attempt to write about. But a brief overview goes a little something like: went home for Christmas; went to Syracuse for Christmas-Christmas; flew home with tissues in one hand and beef jerky in the other; shot the most b-e-a-u-tiful New Year’s Eve wedding; had my brother Cam and his girlfriend Casey visit for six days; and finished a five-day antibiotic for bronchitis with side effects that made me just a tad more loopy than I am in everyday life. Yes, I DID try to pay the UPS guy with just one quarter, and wondered why he needed more than that.. It took me a few, but I got it. ;)

So yesterday? I ate an entire package of Toaster Strudel. I’m telling you, those commercials will be the death of me. It’s like I see one, showcasing those perfectly uniform lines of creamy icing on those perfectly flaky and gooey fruity treats, and I just. CAN’T. HELP. MYSELF. Within the hour, I was headed to the grocery store. Where I ALSO picked up orange juice and grape-nuts cereal to make up for the fact… (~~Oh-but-I-also-picked-up-an-apple-pie!!~~)

My BIRTHDAY month is here!! Just a little less than three weeks and counting. And for your own convenience (you know who you are) I’ve created this here Pinterest board of things I love! ;) The 30th falls on a Monday this year, but I’mma party on my own while Dylan’s at work by making my own cake. SEE!

Last week, during Cam and Casey’s trip to Houston, we went to the zoo! It’s my go-to destination for all visitors. WHO doesn’t like watching apes eat bugs out of each other’s heads anyway?? Or two red maned wolves attempting to kill a sweet little anteater minding its own sweet little business? OR two baby monkeys rip a worm in half and share it like best buds? Obviously, not us. Because I assure you, it was basically awesome. That, and the people watching is fantastic!

LIFE! It is beautiful. And I’ve been reminded of that a lot lately. SO many of my close friends are either getting engaged or having babies. I mean, seriously! THREE baby-announcements in THREE days?! When did we get this old? I’m not sure. But one thing I know from visiting the zoo? I want to be a hott and healthy mom someday. You know, that mom with the long flowing hair done up in waves. Wearing skinny jeans and bedazzled flats. She’s basically my hero.

Song of the Week: After the Storm by Mumford & Sons. I know I’ve highlighted pretty much every song on this album, but there’s just something so calming and peaceful about it. Whenever I need to relax, I listen to this song. I’ve also found that the Sigh No More album is the perfect drive-home-after-a-wedding album. Very reflective and pretty and sweet! And it’s especially great for when you’re sick in bed. With apple pie. Check out After the Storm HERE.

A Year for Sharing

I have this feeling… That 2012 is going to be one of the best years of my life. That though it’s begun with a dead phone, a dead computer, and a bout of viral bronchitis, it’s still so full of promise. Goals begging to be fulfilled.. And big, exciting changes on the horizon. Take note: This is NOT code for “baby.”

As 2012 has taken off, I’ve been thinking. A lot. It turns out when you lose your voice, you really have no one to share things with but yourself. And I’m CONVINCED this is Dylan’s dream-come-true. ;) But I digress… I’ve been thinking a lot about this blog. This beautiful outlet for writing my thoughts and building community with brides and grooms, friends and family, and fellow photographers across the globe. I’m so thankful for the time capsule it’s become.
